Northern Elephant Seal
Distribution & Migration

Male northern elephant seals are seagoing mammals that are
away from land for three quarters of the year. It is not
unusual to see male elephant seals in British Columbia and
Alaskan waters in summer. Females
forage between 40° and 48°N latitude and males travel to the
Gulf of Alaska and eastern Aleutian Islands. Hence, females
travel more than 5,500 km and males more than 11,000
kilometers during postbreeding migration (Stewart et al.
1994a).
