Steller Sea Lion Eumetopias jubatus

Steller Sea Lion Conservation

The Steller sea lion in Canada is a Species of Special Concern (COSEWIC 2003). The United States considers the eastern stock (east of 1440W) to be threatened and the western stock to be endangered. Steller sea lion numbers in the United States declined by about 75% in recent years (Calkins et al. 1999). The western stock plummeted from about 60,000 animals in 1985 to about 20,000 animals in 1990. Pup counts in 2003 and 2004 were the lowest on record (Fritz and  Stinchcom 2005).

The eastern stock increased slowly to just over 20,000 animals by 1998. Trends in numbers of pups  in Southeast Alaska between 1979 and 1997 increased by an average of 5.9% per year between 1979 and 1997 and +1.7% per year between 1989 and 1997. The number of sea lions in southeast Alaska was estimated to be about 19000 animals of all ages in 1997 and near the highest in recorded history (Calkins et al. 1999).
