The beluga is found in the Arctic and subarctic waters of Russia, Alaska, Canada and Greenland.  Some belugas migrate as the ice forms and retract each year in the Arctic. In the North Pacific, belugas are found in the Bering Sea, the Gulf of Alaska (Cook Inlet), and the Sea of Okhotsk (Reeves et al. 2002). About 400 animals reside in Cook Inlet, Alaska. This population has was once found from Cook Inlet to Yakutat Bay, but it is now restricted to Cook Inlet.
