Blue Whale Balaenoptera musculus

Blue Whale Distribution & Migration

Blue Whale Pacific Distribution Map

The blue whale migrates towards the poles to feed for the northern and southern summers and returns to warm tropical waters to breed. Blue whales off California in summer spend the winter off southern California and Baja California. The winter destination of whales seen in summer in the Gulf of Alaska and the Aleutians is not known. During the summer it is found from the Sanriku coast of Honshu along the south shore of the Aleutian Islands, the Gulf of Alaska to central Baja California. They do not appear to penetrate far into the Bering Sea. In the winter, blue whales are found from southern Honshu south to the Bonin Islands, and Taiwan in the western Pacific, and at least to Nayarit, Mexico (Rice 1998)
