Blue Whale Balaenoptera musculus

Blue Whale Identification

Field marks: Huge, mottled gray whale with small dorsal fin on lower back. Flat topped head, splash guard in front of blowholes. Blow up to 10m high every 1-2 mins. Dives about 3-5 minutes (max 20 mins), tail raised slightly. Mostly single. Does not breach.

Similar species: Fin whale has similar blow but lacks broad head and mottled color. Fins whales do not raise tail flukes.

Habitat: Coastal shelf to open ocean.
