California Sea Lion Distribution Map

There are three subspecies of California sea lion. The subspecies that inhabits the west coast of North America is Z. c. californianus, on the Galapagos Islands is Z. c. wollbaeki and extirpated from Japan was Z. c. japonicus. Male California sea lions roam to the north after breeding to British Columbia. Galapagos sea lions remain around the islands for their entire lives. Japanese sea lions once ranged the south coast of Kamchatka, the Sea of Japan to western Korea (Reeves et al. 2002).
