Fin Whale Balaenoptera physalus

Fin Whale Distribution and Migration

Fin Whale Pacific Distribution Map

The fin whale is found in all the world’s oceans outside of the polar seas. North Pacific fin whales are thought to migrate between warmer tropical waters in winter and cooler temperate ocean waters in summer but this species is not studied in any detail (Wilson and Duff 1999). However the migration has many oddities and remains unexplained. Some do not appear to migrate while others appear to move across latitudes (Wilson and Ruff 1999). Tagged whales have traveled 1700 km in nine days (Wilson and Ruff 1999).
