Harbour Seal Phoca vitulina

Harbour Seal Behaviour

Harbour seals slap the water with a force that sounds and carries like a gunshot. This is probably a prelude to mating. Seals are gregarious on land when they haul-out of the water but they travel and hunt mostly alone often staying in a small local area for months or years (Bigg 1981, Olesiuk reported by Baird 2001). Seals haul-out on small rocky islets, spits, sand bars, floats and log booms.
