Minke Whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata

Minke Whale Identification

Field marks: Smallest of baleen whales with pointed head, dark above, lighter below. White-banded flippers. Low inconspicuous blow under 1m, up to 8 times every 45 sec. Dive 15-20 mins. Usually alone or in small groups. Fast swimmer, will approach boats. Blow hole and dorsal fin surfaces at same time.

Similar species: The Humpback Whale is darker and raises tail flukes..
