Northern Elephant Seal Mirounga angustirostris

Northern Elephant Seal Conservation

The northern elephant seal was hunted within a breath of extinction in the 1800s for its blubber that was rendered into oil. Its relative young breeding age allowed the seal population to recover rapidly to over 150,000 individuals. Elephant seals are increasing at about 6% per year in a remarkable recovery (Stewart et al. 1994b). The seal is protected in the U.S.A. under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 and in Mexico under the Ley General de Vida Silvestre NOM-059-ECOL-1994.
