Sei Whale Balaenoptera borealis

Sei Whale Identification

 

 

Field marks: Large, dark with pale belly, and light mottles and spotting. Both jaws grey. Tall blow up to 3m, 2-3 blows followed by 20-30 secs., repeated. Dive 15-30 mins. Seldom shows tail flukes. Usually alone or in groups up to 6. Fast swimmer over short distances. Blow and dorsal fin surfaces at same time

Similar species: Fin Whale same size but jaw white and surfaces with blow holes first followed by dorsal fin. Blue Whale is larger, Minke is smaller. Humpback darker and raises tail flukes.

Habitat: Open ocean but also over coastal shelf.

Food: Krill, herring and other small schooling fish.
