Sperm Whale Identification

Field marks: Large whale, huge head, black or dark brown, appears wrinkled on body, inconspicuous dorsal fin. Low blow pointed forward and to left from front of head. Lies motionless at surface. Does not breach. Usually alone. Shows tail flukes.  Spend about 10 mins. resting at surface before deep dive up to 40 mins.  

Similar species: Blow from a distance resembles other large whales.  

Habitat: Offshore deep waters.

Food: Deep ocean squid.
