The Pacific WildLife Foundation is a non-profit coastal and marine research and education society  that inspires an appreciation for objective scientific research and conservation of the ocean. We conduct original research, develop novel education programs, and inspire an appreciation for conservation of the ocean. 

Sperm Whale Identification

Field marks: Large whale, huge head, black or dark brown, appears wrinkled on body, inconspicuous dorsal fin. Low blow pointed forward and to left from front of head. Lies motionless at surface. Does not breach. Usually alone. Shows tail flukes.  Spend about 10 mins. resting at surface before deep dive up to 40 mins.  

Similar species: Blow from a distance resembles other large whales.  

Habitat: Offshore deep waters.

Food: Deep ocean squid.
